Founded in 1977 under cabinet conclusion CP43 (77)15, the Sierra Leone News Agency (SLENA) is the nation’s official news agency. It was established to deliver accurate and timely information through modern communication channels. From its inception, SLENA has been committed to fostering a free, democratic media landscape across Africa, guided by the principles outlined in the Kampala Declaration.Throughout its history, SLENA has undergone significant transformations. Notably 1987, the agency initiated a pilot project with UNESCO’s support, which solidified its role as a crucial news source. By 1997, SLENA had established provincial bureaus and produced daily bulletins, expanding its reach and influence. After a brief period of publishing the "Sierra News" tabloid from 2000 to 2005, the agency faced challenges. Still, it reemerged in July 2020 with renewed vigor and a strategic focus on modern media demands.Today, SLENA stands as a trusted source of information for both national and international audiences. Our mission is to enlighten, unify, and inspire through credible journalism that upholds the values of transparency, integrity, and responsibility.
