In a significant move to boost youth rehabilitation, Don Bosco Fambul officially handed over technical materials to the Ministry of Social Welfare for the Approved School on October 8, 2025. The ceremony, chaired by the former Officer-in-Charge, Mr. Idrissa, marked the culmination of years of advocacy for practical skills training at the facility.
Mr. Idrissa opened the proceedings by thanking the Honourable Deputy Minister of Social Welfare and Don Bosco Fambul, particularly its Director, Reverend Father Edwin Tangie. He recounted persistent efforts to secure donor approval for the project, noting that the school had previously offered only formal education, with crucial support from Don Bosco Fambul providing teaching materials for its unpaid staff. The long-pending proposal’s approval finally enabled this handover, channeled through the Ministry for the benefit of young offenders.
Reverend Father Edwin Tangie elaborated on the initiative’s objectives. He emphasized Don Bosco Fambul’s mission to support marginalized youth, including those at the Approved School detained for various offences. To combat idleness and foster personal development, Don Bosco Fambul and its partners have provided starter kits for three key vocational areas: Carpentry, Tailoring, and Agriculture.
Father Tangie stated that the core objective is to equip these young individuals with marketable skills, ensuring that upon reintegration into society whether after two or three years they can become productive, self-sufficient citizens, thereby reducing the likelihood of re-offending. He described the program as a crucial preventative system and disclosed an investment exceeding five thousand dollars.
A donor representative, Mr. Matias, commended Father Tangie and Don Bosco Fambul for their collaboration. He reaffirmed his organization’s global mission to help young people build better lives, noting their successful ongoing partnership in Sierra Leone.
The Honourable Deputy Minister of Social Welfare, Alhaji Mohammed Haji Kella, representing Minister Melrose Karminty, delivered the keynote address. He praised Don Bosco Fambul as a steadfast supporter of Sierra Leone’s youth, especially in the post-civil war era. The Deputy Minister aligned the project with the government’s national agenda, specifically the “Five Big Changers” human capital development pillar.
He stressed that development extends beyond academics to essential skill-building. The training in tailoring, carpentry, and agriculture directly complements the government’s “Feed Salone” project and its ambitious goal to create 500,000 jobs by 2030. He expressed the government’s vision for these youths to become future managers in their fields.
To ensure sustainability and accountability, the Deputy Minister directed the current Officer-in-Charge to submit monthly reports on the utilization of the materials to the Ministry. This measure is designed to maximize the program’s impact and provide a tangible path to rehabilitation for children in conflict with the law.
