Government hands over land for civil servants housing project

The Government has handed over 250 acres of land for housing project intended to provide affordable homes for public and civil servants.

The handover took place on Tuesday at Ministry of Lands, Housing and Country Planning in Freetown and marks important step in government’s efforts to improve welfare for public sector workers.

Lands Minister Turad Senessie said the project shows government’s commitment to helping civil servants get decent and affordable housing.

He said survey work for the site has been completed and that other technical and administrative processes are moving ahead.

Senessie handed the land documents to Public Administration and Political Affairs Minister Amara Kallon, who will pass them to the developers so construction can begin.

He said 50 acres will be used for high-end residential housing, while the rest of the land will be developed for other affordable housing options for civil servants.

Kallon said the project could help reduce the heavy rent burden many civil servants face and allow them to invest in homes of their own.

He added that the first phase of construction could begin within the next year if work continues as planned.

The project coordinator praised both ministers for moving quickly to secure the land after the government signed memorandum of understanding with developers in Senegal.

The coordinator said the houses would be built to international standards and remain affordable for the people the project is meant to serve.

The project is part of broader government efforts to improve housing access and living conditions for public and civil servants across Sierra Leone.
