In a continued effort to safeguard the youthful population of Sierra Leone, the National Taskforce.

Drug and Substance Abuse, with support from the Government of Sierra Leone, on Friday 17th April 2026, officially inaugurated a Drug and Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Centre at the 9th Battalion Military Barracks in Kono District.

This facility marks a significant milestone for Kono District, providing a safe, secure, and structured environment for individuals affected by substance abuse to undergo recovery and reintegrate into society. The centre is expected to contribute to reducing substance abuse, enhancing community safety, and restoring hope for affected families. The first cohort of beneficiaries will undergo a two-month rehabilitation programme, complemented by structured aftercare support aimed at minimising relapse.

The Ministry of Social Welfare, represented by Director Ansu Konneh, will oversee the provision of welfare services and psychosocial support to clients. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Local Government, represented by Deputy Minister Alfred Jamiru, will play a pivotal role in strengthening community engagement and coordinating local-level interventions.

Speaking on behalf of the Coordination Pillar, Dr Abdul Mbawa underscored the importance of sustained multi-sectoral collaboration in ensuring the effective implementation and long-term sustainability of the initiative.

This intervention significantly strengthens access to rehabilitation services in Kono District and reflects the Government’s unwavering commitment to addressing drug and substance abuse across Sierra Leone.

The Makeni Rehabilitation Centre is scheduled to be inaugurated tomorrow, further expanding the reach of these critical services nationwide.

God bless Mama Salone.
