Makeni Consultation Highlights Prospects for Community-Level Involvement in Decentralisation, Local Governance.

Vice President Dr Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh led a high-level consultation in Makeni, bringing local councils, Paramount Chiefs, and key stakeholders gathering practical recommendations for strengthening decentralisation and improving local governance.

World Bank-supported engagement brought ministers responsible for health, lands, education, agriculture, and decentralisation, as well as senior government officials, to listen directly to community-level actors, assessing programs and identifying persistent governance challenges.

"Intention moves beyond policy discussions, hearing directly from implementing decentralisation at the local level what works, what fails, what government needs improving," Vice President Jalloh stated.

Consultation forms part of a broader government effort to build consensus around reforms making local governance and decentralisation more effective and responsive to citizens.

Paramount Chief Bai Bairoh Mabolleh Anshenni III, Mara Chiefdom, Bombali District, described engagement as a "very welcome idea and very welcome stance."

"This marks the first time witnessing such a laudable, highly engaging, interactive meeting," he said, urging Government to carefully consider stakeholder submissions.

Councillor Rosemary H. Kamara, Bombali District, highlighted development priorities including healthcare, roads, and stronger collaboration between local councils and central government. She approached the Vice President with initiatives "widening development area bringing services closer people," particularly through improved health services, roads, and local council support.

Other stakeholders raised concerns and proposed practical solutions based on community experiences, reinforcing local governance actors' stronger policy-shaping voice importance.
