The Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) has finalized its Annual Work Plan for the Free Education Project, reaffirming its commitment to expanding access to quality education in Sierra Leone.
On November 21, 2024, the ministry convened a workshop at which key stakeholders, including ministry officials, educators, and development partners, collaborated to outline strategic goals for the coming year. The gathering highlighted innovations and initiatives to address persistent challenges in the education sector.
Mr. Mokihlesur Rahman, the World Bank's Education Task Team Leader, emphasized the introduction of solar-powered tablets into schools as a transformative initiative. He explained that these devices are tailored for academic use to enhance students’ learning experiences and bridge technological gaps in classrooms nationwide.
In addition, Mr. Ambrose Sesay, Project Coordinator for the Free Education Project, announced that preparations for 2025 are well underway. A significant milestone includes a contract with Wi Prints, a local printing company, to produce textbooks for all schoolchildren. Mr. Sesay confirmed that the books will be ready for distribution by January 2025, ensuring students have equitable access to essential learning materials.
Developing the Annual Work Plan and implementing these forward-looking initiatives underscore MBSSE's dedication to improving the education system sustainably. Stakeholders expressed optimism about the potential impact of these measures on academic outcomes and the broader education landscape.
