Alhaji Musa Timothy Kabba, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Sierra Leone Police, and other have briefed journalists about an incident involving a vehicle registered to the Sierra Leone embassy in Conakry where authorities in Guinea discovered seven suitcases containing substances suspected to be cocaine, along with a sum of $2,000 in cash and a mobile phone.
Inspector General of Police William Fayia Sellu said they have set up task force to investigate the matter. The team will scrutinize the origins of the vehicle, the circumstances surrounding its interception, and the actions of police officers stationed at various checkpoints. He emphasized that those found negligent will face the consequences under the law.
Minister Kabba provided context, during the press conference that took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Conference Room on the 16th January, 2025, revealing that on December 31, 2024, Guinean authorities impounded the utility vehicle after discovering the suspected narcotics inside. The driver and another occupant were arrested, and an ongoing investigation is in progress. The Sierra Leone government is collaborating closely with Guinean officials to clarify the situation and assert its diplomatic interests.
Kabba stressed the importance of adhering to diplomatic protocols to maintain the nation's reputation. He warned against speculation on social media regarding international relations and urged the public to rely on official communications from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Information and Civic Education for accurate information.
Regarding inquiries about the Sierra Leone Ambassador's to the Republic of Guinea status, Alimamy Bangura, the Minister clarified that the ambassador is not under house arrest and continues to fulfill his duties, protected by the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations. He confirmed that the ambassador has been recalled to Sierra Leone to explain how an embassy vehicle was implicated in this incident.
The Minister reiterated that while the ambassador is the head of the mission, the suspected cocaine was not found in his personal vehicle, and he was not present in the utility vehicle at the time of the incident. Two individuals arrested in connection with the case are currently under investigation.
On January 13, 2025, the Guinean government informed Sierra Leone about the December 31 incident involving the arrest of two individuals in the embassy vehicle. The Sierra Leone Ministry of Foreign Affairs has maintained an ongoing dialogue with Guinean authorities, emphasizing its commitment to a thorough investigation and accountability.
Chernor Bah, the Minister of Information and Civic Education, reaffirmed the government's dedication to transparency and restoring the nation's positive image. The Foreign Minister is actively managing the situation and is prepared to address any arising questions, reaffirming the government's stance against illicit activities.
