The Ministry of Social Welfare has officially introduced the Social Workers Regulatory Bill before Parliament, marking a significant milestone in the regulation and recognition of social work as a profession in Sierra Leone.
Presenting the bill, the Minister of Social Welfare, Hon. Melrose Karminty, emphasised that the proposed legislation aims to enhance the profession of social work and improve the welfare of the populace. She noted that the bill's benefits cannot be overstated, as it seeks to establish a regulatory framework that will bring structure, credibility, and respect to the field of social work.
Hon. Miatta Amara commended Minister Karminty for her initiative, stating that it is high time the bill became law. She stressed that social work is not a profession driven by financial gain but by service, sacrifice, and commitment to national development. Hon. Amara highlighted the urgent need for social workers across the country, citing the plight of vulnerable individuals in areas such as Guard Street, Fourah Bay Road, and beach communities, where many struggle with homelessness and other social challenges. She underscored the necessity of social workers engaging in education, advocacy, and outreach efforts in hospitals, police stations, and communities.
Adding to the discussion, Hon. Abdul Karim Kamara emphasised the importance of integrity among social workers. He stated that social workers should serve as role models and agents of change, ensuring their presence in any institution or community is felt through their positive contributions.
Hon. Hindolo Moi Gafoi also weighed in on the debate, comparing the profession’s recognition in Sierra Leone to that in Europe, where social workers receive higher remuneration and more tremendous respect than some legal professionals. He called for more structured support and incentives to elevate the status of social workers in the country.
Concluding the session, Minister Karminty expressed gratitude to Parliament for their support and contributions. She also acknowledged the presence of lecturers and students who attended the parliamentary session, as well as the relentless efforts of her ministry’s staff in advancing the bill.
