The Minister of Planning and Economic Development (MoPED), Madam Kenyeh Barlay, has been engaged to chair the Steering Committee for the evaluation of Peacebuilding Fund (PBF) project activities in Sierra Leone. This initiative was discussed during a meeting at the Minister’s office with Madam Irene Limo, Coordinator of the Peacebuilding Fund Secretariat at the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office in Freetown.

The Peacebuilding Fund’s priorities align with the UN’s global strategy and national conflict analyses. They focus on promoting inclusive peace processes, addressing the root causes of conflict, and fostering social cohesion.

During the engagement, Madam Limo highlighted the need for an in-depth assessment of PBF projects implemented in Sierra Leone over the past decade. She urged Minister Barlay to lead the evaluation process in collaboration with other Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to determine the impact and effectiveness of these initiatives.

The assessment, which is expected to last between five to six months, aims to identify key achievements, existing challenges, and the eligibility criteria for future PBF interventions. Madam Limo also emphasized the importance of collaboration with the Peace Commission of Sierra Leone to strengthen national peacebuilding efforts.

In response, Minister Barlay reaffirmed her ministry’s commitment to fostering effective partnerships and ensuring coordinated project implementation. She expressed appreciation to the UN Peacebuilding Fund Secretariat and assured Madam Limo of MoPED’s full support. She further noted that updates would be provided to His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio where necessary.

The minister also underscored the importance of transparency and accountability, urging the establishment of a Steering Committee comprising MDAs, civil society organizations, and other key stakeholders.

Speaking at the meeting, the Director of the Development Assistance Coordination Office, Madam Abie Elizabeth Kamara, reiterated that the government and its partners are prepared to take the lead, provided there is a clear framework to guide the process without conflicts of interest.

Minister Barlay concluded by assuring all stakeholders of her ministry’s commitment to facilitating the Steering Committee’s work to ensure the successful assessment of PBF projects in Sierra Leone.
