The Ministry of Technical and Higher Education (MTHE) on 14th November 2025 held a farewell ceremony for twenty-nine students awarded the Russian State Budgetary Scholarship and the RUDN University Scholarship.
The event, held in the Ministry’s Conference Room at New England Ville, was attended by the Acting Students Secretary, ministry officials, and the beneficiaries.
Delivering his statement, the Acting Students Secretary, George A. Dambo, noted that the Ministry had received over 500 applications for the 2025/2026 academic year. Following a rigorous screening and interview process, 21 students were selected under the Russian State Government Scholarship and 8 under the RUDN University scheme.
He further highlighted that the group comprised 10 females and 19 males, with fields of study ranging from medical sciences and tropical medicine to engineering, international relations, business, and physics. Dambo emphasized that these scholarships align with President Bio’s focus on human capital development.
He also cautioned the public against fake scholarship advertisements, stating that the Ministry had not endorsed certain notices circulating online, including those relating to Russia and Hungary. Say.
He mentioned that an individual identified as Ibrahim Koroma had allegedly posed as a consultant and deceived applicants.
According to Dambo, a police report had been filed, the ACC notified, and the Ministry was seeking public assistance with any information that could help locate the suspect.
He urged students and parents to remain vigilant and reiterated that all legitimate government scholarships are free of charge.
Dambo encouraged the awardees to represent Sierra Leone with discipline and academic excellence.
He expressed confidence that their training—particularly in medical fields—would help reduce dependency on overseas medical referrals and strengthen the country’s workforce.
He added that the farewell ceremony demonstrates Sierra Leone’s ongoing investment in education and its commitment to grooming young citizens for effective national service.
Two of the awardees, Kadiatu Phylicia Sherif and Joseph M. Musa, expressed their gratitude. Sherif, who will pursue a master’s degree in International Relations and Diplomacy at the People’s Friendship University of Russia (RUDN), urged young people, especially girls, to apply for scholarships boldly and confidently.
Musa, who is set to study Public Service at St. Petersburg State Pediatric Medical University, underscored the importance of strengthening Sierra Leone’s public health system and expressed his hope of contributing meaningfully upon his return.
