In a meaningful move to support Sierra Leone’s university academics, the Ministry of Technical and Higher Education (MTHE) recently engaged in an open discussion with the Union of Academic Staff Association (UASA), to address critical issues that impact the welfare and conditions of service for academic staff in public tertiary institutions across Sierra Leone.
During the meeting that took place on July 17th, 2025, at the Ministry’s office located in Sababu, New England Ville, Freetown, UASA representatives openly shared their concerns, highlighting pressing issues such as delays in staff promotions, backlog of owed salaries to universities, and delays in the disbursement of severance and ex-gratia benefits for retired staff.
While acknowledging the efforts already made by government authorities to tackle some of these challenges, UASA mentioned that more tangible actions are urgently needed to uplift the spirits and restore confidence among academic personnel.
In response, Dr. Haja Ramatulai Wurie, the Minister of Technical and Higher Education, expressed understanding and empathy. She confirmed the government’s commitment to resolving these issues and reassured the union that the Ministry is actively working alongside the Office of the Chief Minister and the Ministry of Finance to fast-track solutions.
The meeting ended on a hopeful note, with both parties reaffirming their dedication to ongoing dialogue and collaboration. They agreed that strengthening Sierra Leone’s higher education system requires continuous partnership and mutual understanding.
The Ministry remains committed to fostering a workplace where academic staff can thrive and well-being of academic staff, ultimately ensuring to delivery of quality education that benefits the nation as a whole.
