MTHE Leadership Engages Tertiary Education Commission Staff

The Ministry Technical Higher Education leadership engaged Tertiary Education Commission staff following Secretariat reopening Wednesday, 8th July 2026. Minister Dr. Haja Ramatulai Wurie, Deputy Minister Mr. Sarjoh Aziz-Kamara, and senior officials visited TEC Secretariat to assess operations and discuss strengthening measures for normal activity resumption.

Permanent Secretary Mr. Mohamed Sheik Kargbo explained direct staff engagement provides first-hand operational information beyond written reports. "Minister requires comprehensive report reflecting ground realities," Mr. Kargbo stated, adding engagement identifies practical support measures for Commission effectiveness.

TEC Administrative Manager Mr. Josephus Sawyer welcomed delegation, expressing appreciation for facilitating Secretariat reopening and staff work resumption. Mr. Sawyer thanked Ministry for continued engagement, acknowledged lessons learned, reaffirmed staff commitment to Commission mandate, provided operational updates, and highlighted immediate priorities.

Minister reminded staff TEC custodian quality assurance higher education, maintaining standards across Sierra Leone tertiary sector. Dr. Wurie acknowledged institutional challenges cannot resolve overnight, encouraged viewing challenges as growth opportunities requiring unity, commitment, and careful planning. "Challenges need not define us; they become opportunities. Focused collective effort strengthens Commission and better serves tertiary education," Minister stated.

Minister called for clear short, medium, long-term action plans from Management and Staff, with short-term gains building foundations for medium-term progress toward long-term vision. Plans require Commissioner review, approval, and implementation. Dr. Wurie highlighted Public Sector Reform Unit Management and Functional Review recommendations for strengthening Commission statutory mandate fulfilment. Ministry engages Public Sector Reform Unit under Public Administration and Political Affairs for updated institutional strengthening recommendations.

Minister emphasised digital transformation integration with WanGov one-stop platform for accreditation processes, improving efficiency, data management, transparency, and modernised service delivery. Public requires accurate quality assurance and accreditation information, with updated accessible lists accredited institutions and programmes while addressing non-compliant institutions per revised TEC Act 2025. Fully functional updated TEC website improves communication, transparency, and public information access, with Ministry Communication Technology and Innovation support available for digital presence strengthening.

Minister expressed appreciation to Chairman Professor Aliyageen Alghali for leadership and service, commending Commissioners, Management, and Staff for dedication and progress achieved. Dr. Wurie noted full TEC Act 2025 implementation ensures Commission effective mandate discharge regulating quality assurance Sierra Leone tertiary education.

Commissioner Professor Osman Sankoh described TEC staff credible dedicated professionals, highlighting Stabilisation Committee support for transition process leading full Secretariat reopening. Committee provided guidance, facilitated engagement, supported smooth transition and normal operations resumption. "We observe and determine measures ensuring TEC fully operational," Professor Sankoh stated.
