The newly appointed Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, His Excellency Zhao Yong, has signaled a strong commitment to youth empowerment and bilateral cooperation during his inaugural courtesy call on the Minister of Youth Affairs, Ibrahim Sannoh.
Held at the Minister’s office in Freetown, the meeting struck a forward-looking tone, with both leaders emphasizing the critical role of young people in driving national progress and deepening ties between the two nations.
Minister Sannoh warmly welcomed the Ambassador and highlighted Sierra Leone’s most compelling asset: its youth. “Ours is a peaceful and beautiful nation of just over eight million people—more than 70% of whom are young,” he noted. “This isn’t just a demographic fact; it’s our greatest opportunity. We are ready to channel this energy into progress that benefits both Sierra Leone and our partners.”
In response, Ambassador Zhao Yong praised the country’s resilience and affirmed China’s focus on youth-driven development. “Young people are the backbone of any nation’s future,” he stated. “China is keen to expand cooperation in skills training, innovation, and exchanges that create real impact for Sierra Leone’s next generation.”
The discussion centered on practical areas for collaboration, including vocational training, technology, and cultural exchanges designed to build capacity and foster mutual understanding.
Both officials expressed optimism about the potential of strengthened ties, framing youth investment as a cornerstone of sustainable development and shared prosperity.
