National Minerals Agency (NMA) will host Sierra Leone’s first PanAfGeo training course on geohazards and mine environmental management from 7 to 12 December 2026 in Freetown.

The announcement follows preparatory engagements involving an international delegation led by Prof. Stanisław Wołkowicz of the Polish Geological Institute, alongside Giuseppe Delmonaco and Dr Francesco Traversa of the Geological Survey of Italy (ISPRA).

The course is expected to bring together about 35 geoscientists and five international trainers from Africa and Europe.

Participants will undertake practical field assessments covering landslide-prone areas across Freetown, geotechnical conditions at amphibolite quarries, as well as slope stability and waste management at an active hematite mine.

The training forms part of Sierra Leone’s participation in PanAfGeo+ (2025–2029), an EU-supported geological cooperation programme focused on strengthening geoscience capacity across Africa.
