Sierra Leone Enacts Professional Social Work Regulatory Bill into Law.

Parliament has officially passed the Professional Social Work Regulatory Bill, 2025 into law, marking a significant milestone for the development and professionalisation of social work in Sierra Leone.

The bill, which was presented by Hon. Abdul Sullaman Marray, Chairman of the Legislative Committee, was initially introduced in Parliament on 24 April 2025. Following further debate and amendments, the legislation received its final approval during the third reading on 29 April 2025.

The new law seeks to regulate the practice of social work in the country by establishing clear professional standards, ethical guidelines, and accountability mechanisms. It aims to elevate the quality and credibility of social work services across Sierra Leone, particularly in critical areas such as child protection, mental health, community development, and social welfare.

The passage of the bill was observed by lecturers and social work students from multiple institutions of higher learning. Many expressed optimism that the legislation would not only safeguard the integrity of the profession but also raise its profile and recognition within both public and private sectors.
