The Sierra Leone Land Administration Project (SLLAP), under the Ministry of Lands, Housing, and Country Planning (MLHCP), organized an orientation session for newly recruited interns and issued certificates to outgoing interns. The event, held on Thursday, 17th October 2024, at the Ministry’s conference hall, was supported by funds from the World Bank and drew attendance from all unit heads.
Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Lands, Permanent Secretary Abdul R.M. Fofanah welcomed the new interns and encouraged them to embrace the challenges in their respective deployment areas. He also extended well wishes to the outgoing interns, highlighting the value of internships in gaining exposure to the job market.
Fofanah emphasized that the internship program provides an excellent platform for career development and urged the interns to approach their roles with humility and a thirst for knowledge. He remarked that gaining vital experience during their internship would be a significant advantage in their future careers.
Dr. Alphajor Cham, SLLAP Project Coordinator, provided insight into the World Bank-funded internship program, noting that this orientation was for the second batch of 21 interns recruited under the project. He explained that the internship program is an annual initiative to offer practical experience and opportunities for securing future employment.
Cham reiterated the importance of the internship program, pointing out that it is a critical entry point into the workforce. He highlighted that SLLAP is a six-year project, now in its second year, and urged interns to treat the program with seriousness. He also emphasized the pivotal role of job experience in building sustainable careers.
The Training Coordinator, Joseph Kpakiwa, expressed gratitude to the outgoing interns, noting that the certificates awarded were a token of appreciation for their hard work.
The newly recruited interns will be deployed across various units, including the National Land Commission (NLC), SLLAP, and the Ministry of Lands, covering procurement, audit, financial management, urban planning, housing development, communications, HR and administration, and ICT.
