Sierra Leone Reaffirms Commitment to Sahel Stability &Regional Unity


The African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council (AU- PSC) and the European Union (EU) Political and Security Committee (EUPSC) has convened their 16th annual joint consultative meeting from the 7th to 9th October 2025.

In his intervention, Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and the AU H.E Harold Bundu reaffirmed his country’ strong commitment to the stability and security of the Sahel region. Emphasizing West Africa’s collective responsibility to address shared challenges related to peace, security, and climate change.

Speaking during deliberations Ambassador Saffa acknowledged the Chair of the AU for October Tebelelo Boang, and commended the leadership of the organizing team for their continued dedication and coordination.

 

He stated that “our priorities have been realigned with the items that will be on the table for the discussion with the EU Political and Security Committee particularly within the context of security and climate change,” he noted, underscoring the alignment of Sierra Leone’s position with regional and international efforts.

Highlighting the situation in the Sahel, H.E Bundu stressed that Sierra Leone, like many countries in West Africa, remains closely affected by developments in the region. “Sierra Leone lies within a short distance of the Sahel, and we are acutely aware of the evolving situation there,” he said.

He assured them that with President Bio as current Chair of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, and has been actively engaging with Sahelian leaders to advance peace and cooperation.

“Sierra Leone wishes to assure the Chair that West Africa remains united and determined to safeguard the stability and security of the Sahel for the peace and prosperity of our entire region,” he added.
