From Ebola to COVID-19—and now Mpox—Sierra Leone continues to show that real change begins at the community level. The Community-Led Action (CLA) approach is once again proving to be a game-changer.
Just two months ago, Mpox cases were rapidly rising across all 16 districts, with major hotspots in Western Area Urban, Western Area Rural, Bo, Kenema, Bombali, Kono, and Port Loko.
Thanks to timely support from GOAL and UNICEF, Community Health Workers were swiftly trained and mobilized to:
Educate communities on Mpox prevention
Identify and refer suspected cases
Support affected households
Monitor contacts
Link communities to vaccination teams
This integrated, grassroots response has been critical in breaking the chain of transmission.
We also recognize the vital contributions of WHO, ECOWAS RCSDC, PSI, and Africa CDC in this coordinated effort.
