Water Resources Minister Announces Major Reforms to Improve Access to Safe Water.

Water Resources Minister, Dr Sao-Kpato Hannah Isatta Macarthy, has announced major reforms to improve access to safe water, strengthen sanitation services and protect water sources across the country.

Speaking at the government's weekly press briefing at the Miatta Civic Centre in Freetown, Dr Macarthy said Sierra Leone, working with the World Bank and other partners, was implementing a programme to address longstanding challenges in the water sector.

The programme focuses on expanding water supply, upgrading infrastructure, strengthening water utilities and reducing water losses through improved monitoring and metering.

A key component, she said, is the planned installation of about 23,000 smart water meters to cut wastage, boost revenue collection and make services more sustainable.

Dr Macarthy stressed the need for better sanitation facilities, including waste management and public toilets, particularly in underserved communities.

She also called for protection of water catchment areas from environmental degradation and harmful human activity.

The minister urged closer collaboration among local councils, water utilities, communities and government institutions to ensure the programme succeeds.

She described the initiative as a major investment in Sierra Leone's water sector, adding that improved water and sanitation services were essential to public health, economic development and environmental protection.

Dr Macarthy urged citizens to pay for water services, take ownership of water infrastructure and help protect the country's water resources.
