Austria Inaugurates New Honorary Consulate Premises in Sierra Leone.

Austria has officially opened its new Honorary Consulate premises in Freetown, marking a significant achievement in bilateral relations. The inauguration ceremony, which took place on February 2, 2026, at Spur Road, Freetown, brought together dignitaries, including the Austrian Deputy Minister for European and International Affairs, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and others, signalling Vienna's renewed diplomatic engagement with Sierra Leone.

Mr. Ram Shankerdas, in his opening remarks, warmly welcomed distinguished guests, highlighting the significance of their presence in fostering continuous Sierra Leone-Austria multilateral discussions. He articulated a forward-looking vision, stating, "Our shared vision extends beyond the growth and prosperity of Sierra Leone; it encompasses the development of our global community as one interconnected world and one shared population."

Madam Ursula Fahringer, Austrian Ambassador to Sierra Leone (with residence in Dakar), jointly welcomed attendees, describing the occasion as both unique and deeply reflective. She highlighted the event's dual significance: not only the inauguration of new consular premises but also the first official visit of an Austrian delegation to Sierra Leone in this decade. Ambassador Fahringer expressed heartfelt hope that this visit signals a definitive turning point in bilateral relations.

She extended profound gratitude to Mr. Jean Cadez and his team, marveling at their extraordinary achievement. Reflecting on her first encounter with the project three years ago, she remarked, "It was already impressive, but what you have accomplished now is extraordinary. The generosity, professionalism, and outstanding support go far beyond expectations; it truly represents the strength of our partnership."

Dr. Nikolaus Marschik, Austrian Deputy Minister for European and International Affairs, commended attendees, calling it a fantastic moment for Sierra Leone-Austria relations. He disclosed engaging in meaningful political dialogue, addressing bilateral issues and regional challenges. Most crucially, he shared collective ideas on strengthening an international rules-based order, a framework vital for Sierra Leone, Austria, and global stability.

Dr. Marschik also shared profound reflections from visiting the Don Bosco project, an initiative Austria has proudly supported for years. Watching nearly 30 young women dedicate themselves to mastering skills as IT experts, tailors, and hairdressers proved truly inspiring.

Highlighting the scale of Austrian commitment, Dr. Marschik noted these new premises are far larger than any standard Austrian embassy. He expressed humility and gratitude for such generosity, viewing it as a tangible reflection of partnership strength and shared values between both nations.
