The Minister of Employment, Labour and Social Security, Mohamed Rahman Swaray, successfully mediated a resolution today to end a strike by the general workforce at CTC Port in Maforki Chiefdom. The industrial action was prompted by key issues concerning workers' welfare.
Minister Swaray, accompanied by the Commissioner of Labour and senior ministry officials, visited the port facility to engage directly with both management and staff. Upon arrival, the Minister convened separate meetings with port management, the local Member of Parliament, and the Paramount Chief of Maforki Chiefdom to address the core concerns raised by the workers.
Following intensive discussions, a series of actionable resolutions with clear timelines was agreed upon. The key points include the establishment of a company-provided medical facility covering staff, their spouses, and up to four dependents under 18 years of age. The company has also committed to reviewing its current salary structure promptly.
Further agreements ensure the provision of necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to all staff and the issuance of detailed, itemized payslips at the end of each month. To strengthen institutional governance, a comprehensive Human Resources manual, attested by the Ministry, will be developed. The company will also recruit a dedicated and qualified Human Resources Officer, as well as a Finance Officer, granting them the appropriate autonomy to perform their duties effectively. Additionally, a separate Terminal Benefit account will be established by the company and its subsidiary.
“The swift and cooperative engagement from all parties has been commendable,” stated Minister Swaray. “Our primary focus was to ensure the legitimate welfare of the workers is addressed while securing the operational continuity of this vital port. The agreed-upon action points provide a clear and fair path forward.”
To conclude the visit, Minister Swaray and his team facilitated a joint session between staff and management to develop a concrete implementation plan for the resolutions, ensuring the matters are settled amicably and sustainably.
The Ministry of Employment, Labour and Social Security will monitor the implementation of these agreements closely.
