The Minister of Health, Dr. Austin Demby, on Monday briefed the House of Parliament on Sierra Leone’s level of preparedness and strategic response to the emerging Mpox outbreak, following the confirmation of two cases earlier this month.
In his statement, Dr. Demby announced the declaration of a public health emergency, a move designed to mobilise resources, accelerate containment efforts, and safeguard the public. “This declaration empowers us to act swiftly to prevent further transmission and provide timely care to those affected,” the Minister told lawmakers.
The Minister informed Parliament that Sierra Leone has received 63,000 doses of the MVA-BN Mpox vaccine, which will be prioritised for frontline healthcare workers and vulnerable communities nationwide. He reassured MPs that the health system is prepared, citing the country’s experience in managing past outbreaks such as Ebola and COVID-19.
“Our health workforce is alert, our emergency systems are active, and we have drawn lessons from previous crises to respond more effectively,” Dr. Demby said. He urged citizens to remain vigilant, report suspected cases early, and comply with public health guidelines to contain the outbreak.
In line with the Ministry’s response strategy, nationwide awareness campaigns have been launched to inform the public about Mpox symptoms, transmission routes, and prevention measures.
The response is being implemented in close collaboration with global health partners, including the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, Africa CDC, and Gavi, all of whom are providing technical expertise, logistical support, and vaccines to bolster national efforts.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, public safety, and coordination as it works to mitigate the impact of the Mpox outbreak and protect the health of all Sierra Leoneans.
