Legislative Committee of Sierra Leone Parliament Reviews Professional Social Work Bill.

The Legislative Committee of Sierra Leone’s Parliament, in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Welfare, presented the Professional Social Work Bill for consideration. The bill, read by the Chairman of the Legislative Committee, Honorable Abdul Sullaman Marray-Conteh, outlines critical measures to strengthen the social work profession in Sierra Leone.

Honorable Marray-Conteh emphasized the bill’s significance, highlighting its potential to enhance professional standards, establish a regulatory framework, and uphold ethical principles in social work practice. He noted that the legislation would introduce licensing requirements, bringing structure and credibility to the field while improving public well-being.

“This bill will empower social workers to address biopsychosocial challenges more effectively, promote social justice, and elevate the profession’s standing,” he stated.

The session was attended by university students, who observed the proceedings as part of their engagement in national policy development.

While the bill was presented for approval, a final decision has been deferred to the first Tuesday of May 2025, when Parliament will reconvene for further deliberation.
