Makeni Hosts Opening of Fifth National Rehabilitation Centre for Drug and Substance Abuse Victims.

Prof. Foday Sahr, Chairman of the National Taskforce on Drug and Substance Abuse, today, 18th April 2026, officially commissioned the Makeni Rehabilitation Centre for victims of drug and substance abuse at the Teko Military Barracks in Makeni City.

In his remarks, Prof. Sahr underscored the Government of Sierra Leone’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the nation’s youth and tackling the escalating challenge of substance abuse. He noted that the Makeni Teko facility is the fifth rehabilitation centre established nationwide, fully funded and managed by the Government, reflecting a sustained national response to the crisis.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, a representative commended the initiative while appealing for continuous medical support throughout the rehabilitation process. The representative further highlighted the need for structured reintegration programmes following the mandatory two-month stay, emphasising that such support is critical in preventing relapse. As aptly stated, “An idle mind is the devil’s workshop.”

Delivering the vote of thanks, Mrs. Margaret Dumbuya, a parent of one of the beneficiaries, expressed profound appreciation to the Government for establishing the centre. She noted that substance abuse continues to devastate families across the country, with many parents particularly mothers bearing the emotional burden daily.

Other key stakeholders, including the Deputy Minister of Local Government and Community Affairs, Alfred Jamiru, and Ansumana Konneh from the Ministry of Social Welfare, reassured beneficiaries of the Government’s commitment to ensuring quality care and service delivery at the facility.

Representatives from the Bombali District Council, alongside private sector partners, also pledged their support to the initiative, including exploring employment opportunities for beneficiaries upon successful completion of their rehabilitation programme.

The establishment of this centre reinforces the importance of a whole of community approach in addressing drug and substance abuse and ensuring sustainable recovery and reintegration.
