Ministry Hands Over 119 Water Points to Moyamba and KenemaHanding over ceremony featured the partners and government representatives.

The Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, in collaboration with GOAL Sierra Leone, formally handed over 119 newly constructed water points to beneficiaries in Moyamba and Kenema districts on October 4, 2025, underscoring the government’s ongoing commitment to expanding access to clean, safe water in line with President Julius Maada Bio’s Big Five Agenda and the Medium-Term National Development Plan, which prioritize improved WASH services for all.

Permanent Secretary Allieu Bakarr Conteh affirmed the government’s dedication to transparency, accountability, and robust partnerships with collaborators like GOAL Sierra Leone. He stressed sustaining and expanding WASH initiatives in rural communities, ensuring lasting impact and consistency across supported districts, with particular regard to the Quankia Chiefdom.

GOAL Sierra Leone Country Director Getu Woyessa Debella outlined the organization’s mission to ensure universal access to safe drinking water and sanitation. GOAL’s WASH interventions began in Kenema District (2018) and expanded to Moyamba (2023), supported by Charity: Water. In the past year, GOAL has constructed more than 742 water points across 12 districts, improving access in schools, health facilities, and rural communities. In Kenema, 79 new water points were completed, including installations at Methodist Primary School (Waayma), St. Michael Primary School (Kawoya), and Sandaru Primary Health Unit. Debella reiterated GOAL’s readiness to continue collaborating with the Ministry to ensure no community is left behind.

Samuka Konneh, Headmaster of National Islamic Primary School, conveyed deep gratitude for the borehole and toilet facilities, noting long-standing water and sanitation challenges that disrupted daily school activities. He pledged diligent maintenance to sustain the facilities. Samba Kallon, a student, shared that prior years’ sanitation gaps forced pupils to use nearby bushes or streams and thanked GOAL and the government, hoping for more opportunities for other communities.

This handover marks a significant advance in sanitation and access to clean water.
