The Ministry of Gender and Children's Affairs held its second coordination meeting with key partners at its conference room in Freetown to discuss preparations for this year's World Children's Day, themed "Inclusion for Every Child." Chaired by Assistant Director Daniel Albert Gbow, the meeting gathered representatives from the National Commission for Children (NCC), Foundation for Rural Development, and other organizations, all contributing valuable insights toward the event's planning.
In his opening remarks, Gbow emphasized the importance of World Children's Day as a platform to advocate for the rights, welfare, and inclusion of vulnerable children nationwide. He outlined an action plan focusing on advocacy, education, and outreach, mainly targeting marginalized groups, including children with disabilities, street children, and those in conflict with the law. "This year's celebration is dedicated to amplifying the voices of children and bringing inclusivity to the forefront," Gbow remarked, highlighting the need for addressing stigma, violence, and lack of access these groups face.
Gbow further stressed the media's vital role in broadcasting the event and the ministry's ongoing initiatives, underscoring the importance of community-level engagement. "Children should not only be the focus but active participants in these activities," he added, calling for a concerted effort among media partners to amplify the event's reach.
The NCC was called upon to facilitate preparations, while Gbow also mentioned Sierra Leone's representation at an upcoming global children's conference in Colombia. Key stakeholders from the ministry, including representatives from UNICEF, World Vision, and CFN, will discuss child protection and advocacy on international platforms.
During the meeting, a participant proposed gathering data on challenges faced by children to guide future advocacy and interventions. In response, Gbow recommended that child-centered organizations like Don Bosco, CFN, and Pikin Welbodi should be part of this year's celebration. It was also suggested that dignity kits be provided to children in care homes, those hospitalized, and others in need.
The meeting concluded with an open discussion, allowing attendees to share perspectives and ideas to ensure the success of this year's World Children's Day. Gbow thanked all partners for their commitment and anticipated continued collaboration for the event's successful execution.
