Ministry of Social Welfare and UNDP Launch Skills Training Project for Persons with Disabilities

The Ministry of Social Welfare, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has launched a Skills Training Project to empower Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). The initiative was officially inaugurated at the Orthopædic Rehabilitation and Medical Services Approved School Ground in Freetown.

Mohamed Yayah Kanneh, a prominent disability rights activist, chaired the ceremony. He commended the Ministry and UNDP for their unwavering commitment to fostering an inclusive environment for PWDs and emphasised the significance of such initiatives in enhancing self-reliance and economic empowerment among individuals with disabilities.

Director Ansu Konneh of the Ministry's Mental Health Department outlined the project's primary objectives, which include protecting PWDs from drug abuse, providing vocational training, and promoting self-sufficiency. He announced that the Ministry and UNDP would provide essential food supplies and training materials to support participants throughout the program.

Speaking on behalf of UNDP, Mrs. Sankoh thanked all stakeholders, including community leaders, law enforcement representatives, and disability advocates, for their support. She highlighted the global imperative of disability inclusion, noting that an estimated 1 billion people worldwide live with disabilities, with 80% residing in Africa. She reaffirmed UNDP’s dedication to the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), emphasising the principle of “leaving no one behind.” According to her, the training center symbolises hope and equality, equipping PWDs with valuable skills to contribute meaningfully to their communities.

In her keynote address, Minister of Social Welfare Melrose Karminty expressed gratitude to UNDP for its continued partnership with the government, citing previous successful collaborations. She called for the eradication of discrimination against PWDs, urging society to acknowledge their capabilities and potential. The Minister stressed the importance of human capital development and encouraged PWDs to leverage the training opportunity to make meaningful contributions to national progress.

As part of their commitment to the initiative, the Ministry and UNDP provided critical supplies, including 30 bags of rice, 30 gallons of cooking oil, 10 sewing machines, and tailoring materials. The project is expected to expand to other regions, promoting inclusivity and empowerment across the country.
