As part of its ongoing commitment to social protection, the Ministry of Social Welfare has distributed tarpaulins and rice to persons with disabilities in Freetown. The initiative, which aims to ease the burden on vulnerable groups, reached beneficiaries residing in government-owned facilities located at Wallace Johnson Street (Government Wharf), Grafton, and Ecowas Street.
Each recipient received one tarpaulin and two 10-kilogram bags of rice. The tarpaulins were donated by Orange Sierra Leone as part of its corporate social responsibility commitment. At the same time, the Chinese Embassy provided rice in support of the Sierra Leonean government’s welfare initiatives.
Minister of Social Welfare, Melrose Karminty, who oversaw the distribution, highlighted the critical need for improved shelter among many persons with disabilities. “Most of these individuals live in substandard housing conditions. The tarpaulins will provide some level of comfort and protection, particularly during the rainy season,” she stated.
Minister Karminty also noted that the Ministry plans to extend similar distributions to beneficiaries in other provinces, ensuring nationwide impact. She reaffirmed the Ministry’s dedication to improving the lives of persons with disabilities, in alignment with its mandate to promote inclusion and safeguard the rights of vulnerable populations.
This initiative reflects the government’s broader commitment to social justice and underscores the importance of partnerships in addressing the needs of marginalised communities.
