The Ministry of Sports, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Sanitation and several development partners, commemorated the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace with a vibrant celebration held at the Africell Volleyball Court, Lumley Beach.
The event, themed “Leveling the Playing Field,” brought together participants from various sports disciplines across the country to highlight sports' critical role in advancing health, inclusion, and national unity.
Speaking at the ceremony, Dr. George Ameh, Country Representative of the World Health Organization (WHO), commended the Government of Sierra Leone for promoting physical activity as a key strategy to combat non-communicable diseases (NCDs), which account for 75% of global deaths. He expressed concern over the high rates of physical inactivity globally—31% among adults and 80% among adolescents—and emphasised WHO’s continued support for Sierra Leone in achieving global reduction targets for inactivity by 2030.
A National Sports Authority (NSA) representative underscored the broader value of sports, noting its positive impact on workplace wellness, mental health, and stress management. He encouraged sports clubs to foster team spirit and healthy competition through regular friendly matches and fitness challenges.
Ismail Kebbie, Programme Manager at the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, described the International Day of Sport as a platform to champion the' health and social benefits of inclusive sporting practices. He emphasised the ministry’s commitment to a life-stage approach that ensures equitable access to sports and physical activity for all, including children, older adults, and persons with disabilities.
Delivering the keynote address, Minister of Sports Madam Augusta James Teima challenged outdated perceptions of sports as secondary pursuits. She highlighted sports as a catalyst for peacebuilding, personal development, and national cohesion. “Sports is no longer just a game—it is a vehicle for transformation, unity, and healthy living,” she stated.
Madam Teima called for increased investment in sports infrastructure and greater inclusion of women, youth, and marginalised communities in national sports programmes. She also addressed disparities in funding and recognition, advocating for fair treatment and reward systems for male and female athletes and technical personnel.
The Minister reiterated the UN’s recognition of April 6 as a day to celebrate the power of sport to promote development and peace, noting that the day’s activities began with a float parade from the Youyi Building to Lumley Beach as a show of national solidarity.
More than 50 organisations participated in the event, amplifying the message of healthier lifestyles through sports. Minister Teima encouraged young people to embrace sports to build resilience, strengthen communities, and contribute to national development.
“Together, let us build an active and inclusive society where sports serve as a platform for health, empowerment, and unity,” she concluded.
