The Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs (MTCA) has officially unveiled the official logo for the "Year of Culture and Creativity 2026," declaring it a symbol of national pride. More than mere branding, the logo embodies a collective commitment to celebrating Sierra Leone’s people, traditions, and creative energy as core drivers of unity and sustainable development. The unveiling ceremony, held at the MTCA Pavilion, in January 19, 2026 set the stage for a year-long national focus.
Crafted with intentional, bold brush strokes in the nation’s colors, the logo’s central focus is its people. It features silhouettes engaged in woodcarving, drumming, and country-cloth weaving iconic practices representing heritage, innovation, and intergenerational knowledge. The design consciously expands the concept of culture to include local cuisine as a unifying, living expression. The handcrafted typography and inclusive figures reinforce a "by-the-people, for-the-people" ethos, emphasizing that 2026 belongs to every citizen and partner.
Senior Permanent Secretary Judith C. Jones, delivering opening remarks, framed the initiative as a strategic engine for tourism and economic development. Conceived by Minister Nabeela Tunis, the year aims to extend opportunities to provincial communities, revive fading traditions, and position Sierra Leone as a premier global destination. She called on media partners to champion a positive national image worldwide.
Minister Tunis herself detailed the logo’s critical role as the official identity for all upcoming activities. "National efforts require clarity and a shared symbol," she stated, noting that citizens must recognize, adopt, and rally behind this emblem. She positioned the year as a logical progression from past campaigns, aligned with national and international frameworks to place culture at the center of livelihoods, dignity, and economic participation.
Minister Tunis issued a direct invitation, urging all artisans, performers, designers, and creative entrepreneurs to register with the Ministry free of charge to strengthen sector data, forge partnerships, and unlock opportunities. She reaffirmed the government’s full commitment, under President Julius Maada Bio’s leadership, to delivering the year through robust collaboration.
The event was brought to life with a short film detailing the logo’s creation and a compelling skit by the Directorate of Culture, Creativity and Innovation, depicting the origins and unique attributes of Sierra Leone’s ethnic groups. Deputy Minister Kadijatu Grace Ahene Kamara delivered the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to participants and reiterating the Ministry’s dedication to an inclusive, collaborative year.
The unveiling marks the official countdown to a transformative year dedicated to honoring Sierra Leone’s past and harnessing its creative future.
