A renewed chapter of diplomatic goodwill and youth-centered collaboration was marked as the New Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, His Excellency Zhao Yong, paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Youth Affairs, Ibrahim Sannoh, at his office in Freetown.

The Ambassador was warmly received by the Minister, who welcomed him to Sierra Leone and congratulated him on his diplomatic appointment. The meeting reflected the enduring friendship between Sierra Leone and the People’s Republic of China, while placing strong emphasis on the central role of young people in national development.

Speaking during the engagement, Minister Ibrahim Sannoh highlighted the immense demographic strength of the country, noting that Sierra Leone remains a peaceful and beautiful nation with a population of slightly over eight million people, more than 70 percent of whom are young people.

“This youthful population presents a powerful opportunity. As a sector, the youth sector is poised for development and progress, and we are committed to transforming this potential into tangible outcomes that benefit both the nation and its partners,” the Minister stated.

In his remarks, Ambassador Zhao Yong expressed admiration for Sierra Leone’s peace, resilience, and youthful energy, describing young people as the backbone of sustainable development.

“China recognizes the strategic importance of youth in shaping the future of any nation. We are impressed by the commitment of the Government of Sierra Leone to youth empowerment, and we remain ready to strengthen cooperation in areas that promote skills development, innovation, and inclusive growth,” the Ambassador said.

He further reaffirmed China’s willingness to deepen bilateral relations through youth-focused initiatives, capacity building, and people-to-people exchanges that will create long-term impact.

The meeting concluded on a note of mutual respect and optimism, with both parties expressing confidence that enhanced collaboration between China and Sierra Leone, particularly within the youth sector, will contribute meaningfully to national transformation and shared prosperity.
