His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio has commissioned a fleet of buses, utility vehicles, motorbikes, and a fully equipped mobile maintenance workshop vehicle for healthcare workers across the country, in a major step toward strengthening Sierra Leone’s healthcare delivery system.
The fleet, comprising 10 buses, 10 utility vehicles, 1 mobile maintenance workshop vehicle and 450 motorbikes, is designed to significantly improve mobility for health personnel, particularly those operating in remote and underserved communities where access has long been a challenge.
Describing the initiative as a historic milestone, President Bio noted that the investment, fully funded by the Government of Sierra Leone with support from friends of the President, represents the first large-scale, comprehensive mobility intervention of its kind in the health sector. He emphasized that addressing transportation gaps is critical to improving response times, expanding outreach services, and ensuring that essential healthcare reaches every corner of the country.
The President further explained that the initiative forms part of the government’s “300 Days of Activism” agenda, which targets zero preventable deaths, zero preventable infant deaths, and zero zero-dose children. According to him, strengthening logistics and mobility is central to achieving these ambitious health outcomes.
“This intervention is not just about vehicles; it is about saving lives, improving access, and delivering quality healthcare where it is most needed,” he stated.
President Bio reaffirmed that the commissioning fulfills a key promise made prior to his election and aligns with the broader human capital development agenda, which prioritizes investments in health, education, and social services to drive national development.
In highlighting the welfare of healthcare workers, the President commended the Ministry of Health for initiating plans to construct housing for mid-level nurses and midwives in Bo. He described the initiative as a critical measure to improve working conditions, boost morale, and retain skilled professionals within the sector.
The President also underscored Sierra Leone’s growing capacity to manage and lead its own development, noting that the country possesses the expertise and human resources required to strengthen its health system without overreliance on foreign support. He called on healthcare workers to uphold professionalism, foster collaboration, and work collectively toward delivering efficient and equitable healthcare services.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to national transformation, President Bio assured that government will continue to implement impactful and sustainable initiatives aimed at improving service delivery and the overall well-being of citizens.
He concluded by calling for unity and shared responsibility, urging all Sierra Leoneans to support efforts to build a resilient healthcare system and a stronger nation.
