Sierra Leone Secures $2.2 Billion Energy Deal to Power Nation’s Future.

Sierra Leone has taken a giant leap toward transforming its energy sector after securing official endorsement for the landmark USD 2.2 Billion Mission 300 Energy Compact. The deal, unveiled at the Bloomberg Global Forum 2025, marks the single largest infrastructure investment in the country’s history.

The initiative, launched under the leadership of President Julius Maada Bio, aims to expand electricity access from 36% to an ambitious 78%, bringing light and power to millions of Sierra Leoneans who currently live without reliable energy.

“This is the most ambitious and comprehensive energy infrastructure initiative ever developed for Sierra Leone,” President Bio said while receiving the Compact Endorsement Letter. “Our Mission 300 Energy Compact, backed by data-driven solutions, holds the greatest promise for unlocking sustainable and inclusive development for our people.”

Mission 300 will focus on renewable energy generation, modernizing transmission and distribution networks, and promoting clean cooking solutions. It also seeks to create a stronger environment for private sector investment and governance reforms, paving the way for long-term stability and growth.

The program is a joint initiative of the World Bank Group and the African Development Bank (AfDB), alongside support from global partners. Its broader vision is to provide electricity access to 300 million people across Africa by 2030.

Sierra Leone’s Mission 300 was developed in record time through the Inter-Ministerial Coordination Group, co-chaired by Minister of Finance Sheku A.F. Bangura and Dr. Kandeh K. Yumkella, Chair of the Presidential Initiative on Climate Change, Renewable Energy and Food Security. Energy compacts from 17 other countries also received endorsement during the event.

For ordinary Sierra Leoneans, the project promises not only more electricity but also jobs, improved healthcare and education services, safer cooking methods, and a stronger economy. With global backing and renewed commitment at home, Mission 300 is set to light up Sierra Leone’s path toward a brighter and more sustainable future.
