Speaker Thomas Issues Definitive Call for Selfless Representation.

Delivering a forceful address as Parliament resumed plenary following an extended recess, Rt. Hon. Speaker Segepoh Solomon Thomas issued an unambiguous directive: Members of Parliament must place the welfare of constituents above all else.

Citing Section 97, Paragraph B of Act No. 6 of the 1991 Constitution of Sierra Leone, Thomas underscored the constitutional mandate binding every parliamentarian to public service. He warned against conduct that prioritizes personal gain or fosters detachment from the populace. “All Members of Parliament shall regard themselves as representatives of the people of Sierra Leone,” he affirmed, admonishing against actions that compromise this sacred obligation.

Welcoming lawmakers back to the chamber, the Speaker reaffirmed that legislative office demands service above self. While political affiliations are recognized, he stressed that ultimate accountability rests with citizens. “You have been elected by your people. You come to this House of Parliament to serve the Republic of Sierra Leone,” he stated.

Thomas provided clarity regarding the parliamentary hiatus, explaining that the break was intentionally scheduled to accommodate the All People’s Congress Party’s (APC) lower-level elections alongside Eid observances. “This decision was made in good spirit, allowing them to participate in the electoral process without hindrance from parliamentary obligations,” he noted.

With the legislative calendar now in motion, the Speaker called for sustained engagement. “There will be frequent sittings, and I urge you to approach your responsibilities with enthusiasm,” he declared. He further advised that attendance alone does not suffice in compelling governmental action; various mechanisms exist for MPs to effectively advocate on behalf of their constituents.

Concluding his address, Thomas extended an invitation to the APC parliamentary leadership for a strategic meeting scheduled for 1:00 PM tomorrow within his chambers, a move signaling commitment to continued collaboration and constructive dialogue.

The Speaker’s remarks serve as both a constitutional reaffirmation and a rallying call, reminding parliamentarians of the weighty trust bestowed upon them by the Sierra Leonean people.
