Turkey Celebrates 101 Years, Strengthening ties with Sierra Leone

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, along with government officials, joined the Turkish Embassy in Sierra Leone to celebrate the 101st anniversary of the Republic of Turkey at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Freetown, Madam Francess Piagie Alghali, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, opened the event by reflecting on the profound shared history between Sierra Leone and Turkey, characterized by resilience in the face of adversity. She noted that both nations have triumphed over conflicts, navigated challenging circumstances, and embarked on transformative journeys toward recovery, reconciliation, and nation-building. These experiences have cultivated a collective spirit of perseverance and hope, laying a foundation for sustainable development and long-term progress.



Emphasizing the importance of shared values, Madam Alghali expressed that hospitality, national identity, and a commitment to peace unite the two nations. These principles not only enhance their diplomatic relations but also fortify their security cooperation, as they collaborate on regional and global platforms to address pressing issues.


Madam Alghali highlighted Turkey's remarkable progress as an inspiring blueprint for Sierra Leone and the world, showcasing what can be achieved through stability, strong leadership, and unwavering commitment to principles. Despite various challenges, Turkey has established itself as a reliable partner, demonstrating resilience and growth. Through technical, humanitarian, and economic initiatives, the partnership has significantly contributed to Sierra Leone's national development while strengthening the bonds of friendship between its people.


“The rapid advancements in our bilateral relations are a testament to the strength of this partnership,” she stated, pointing to the remarkable increase in trade and the growing presence of Turkish businesses in Sierra Leone as indicators of mutual potential.


She affirmed the Sierra Leonean government’s welcoming stance towards investments from Turkey and expressed a commitment to nurturing deeper ties through cooperative efforts that benefit both nations. Looking ahead, she expressed enthusiasm for expanding economic collaboration, joint investments, and strengthening people-to-people connections that will foster prosperity for both countries.


On a multilateral level, Sierra Leone actively collaborates with Turkey within the frameworks of the United Nations, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the African Union, recognizing the necessity of international cooperation to tackle pressing global challenges. These alliances facilitate coordinated approaches to complex issues such as climate change, international security, and sustainable economic development.


The Deputy Minister reaffirmed that Sierra Leone and Turkey are dedicated to joining forces in addressing global challenges, including conflict resolution, peacekeeping, and humanitarian efforts. As a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, Sierra Leone is committed to responding to global conflicts, advocating for stronger reforms in international institutions to protect civilians and prevent atrocities.


Together, they aim to promote a global order that fosters stability and sustainable development for all, while advancing dialogues that effectively resolve conflicts and manage shared priorities.


The Turkish Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Her Excellency Sibel Erkan, underscored the significance of multilateralism, calling for collective action in the pursuit of humanity’s shared values. She noted the substantial progress within the Turkey-Africa relationship in recent decades, emphasizing support for the principle of African solutions to African problems.



Celebrating the 53rd anniversary of their friendship with Sierra Leone, Ambassador Erkan recognized the personal bonds forged between the leaders of both nations, which have advanced cooperation on various fronts. Under the leadership of President Julius Maada Bio, Sierra Leone's strength has grown, marked by several high-level visits to Turkey.


The Ambassador expressed gratitude to the honorable ministers, esteemed members of Parliament, ambassadors, high commissioners, members of the diplomatic and consular corps, and distinguished guests for their vital contributions to the friendship between Turkey and Sierra Leone. As they gathered to commemorate the 101st anniversary of the Republic of Turkey, the spirit of collaboration and enduring partnership shone brightly, signaling a promising future for both nations.
