The Resident Coordinator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and Team paid a visit to the Minister of Internal Affairs at his Gloucester Street Office in Freetown, to discuss their interventions and development plans with the Government of Sierra Leone especially on the current transition of the Sierra Leone Police (SLP), from a Force to a Service, and their Strategic Plan.
In his intervention the Inspector General of Police William Fayia Sellu, stated that the visit was to keep the Minister abreast on what has been happening between the UNDP Team and the SLP interms of the SLP updates with support from the UNDP.
In Congratulating the Minister, the UNDP Resident Coordinator in Sierra Leone Mr. Fredrick Ampiah said their visit was to discuss their interventions and potential collaborations, to support sustainable development to the Government of Sierra Leone. Adding that their visit also aimed at seeking the Minister's perspectives and guidance in meeting their agenda going forward. He also disclosed their plans to build the capacity of the SLP, noting that the face of Police is the face of a country, and is therefore at the core of development, not just policing.
Mr. Frederick Ampiah reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration, cooperation and to further exploring new areas of support that will be beneficial to the people of Sierra Leone.
On his part, the Minister of Internal Affairs Rtd AIG Morie Lengor Esq, thanked the UNDP family on behalf of His Excellency the President Brig Rtd Julius Maada Bio for their laudable venture and developmental support to the Government and people of Sierra Leone, especially the SLP. He said the UNDP has been a long-standing partner of Sierra Leone supporting key security sectors through different projects and programs. He also appreciated the Team for their relentless effort towards the completion of the SLP Strategic Plan, awaiting launching, and its transition.
"I will like to see the rationalization and streamlining of partners support to Ministries so as to avoid duplication and overconcentration of support to certain Agencies, whiles others are left out, I will also like to see a clear entering and exit strategies for partners supporting the Ministry to prevent an unending dependency of partners' Minister Lengor Esq stated.
The Minister further intimated the RC about the development of the Ministry's Strategic Plan which process will soon commence, stating that as a security oriented Ministry, their vision is to support and enhance their National security vision to be the global leader in peace and security. He further appealed for the UNDPs support during the process, to which the RC responded positively.
Other members of the team added their voices, in areas of their intervention in providing technical support to the Sierra Leone Correctional Service, and also pledged to extend support to other Agencies lncluding but not limited to the Sierra Leone Arms and Ammunition Commission and the National Fire Force. They further reilliterated that unlike other partners the UNDP is a development partner and will continue to work with Sierra Leone in its developmental strides.
