Youth and Heritage: The Monuments and Relics Commission connects School Children to their Heritage via Museums in Sierra Leone.

By: Francis Musa Momoh

The Monuments and Relics Commission in the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs and the Museums (National and Railway) has launched the Museum Awareness Campaign (MAC) at Annie Walsh Memorial School 25 September 2025.

The initiative aimed at advancing knowledge in public history, gauging public and student’s perception, and understanding of the social, historical and cultural importance of the Museum, heritage, restoration and conservation.

These conversations in the schools will bring the pupils closer to their nation’s historical realities, allow them to visit the museums, reflect and ask deep questions about an institution that hold critical heritage assets natural, cultural and industrial.

We believe that widening access to diverse groups will facilitate learning from the children who activate best practices to position the museums as a viable cultural hub in the nation.

The Campaign targets schools in Freetown and its environs for a start. The Commission and the museums are open to collaborators for the initiative’s expansion to more schools.
