Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs Gears Up for World Children’s Day with Third Coordination Meeting.

The Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs held its third coordination meeting today with development partners to finalise preparations for World Children’s Day (WCD), which is set for later this month. Chaired by Assistant Director Daniel Albert Gbow, the session brought together key representatives from various organisations to discuss logistics, budget allocations, and event planning.

In his remarks, Mr Gbow reflected on input from the previous inception meeting and outlined the main activities for World Children’s Day. Plans include media engagements to promote the day’s importance, community outreach programs, recreational events like games and talent showcases, and a flagship panel discussion where children interact with stakeholders. This year’s panel will focus on the Children’s Rights Act (CRA) bill, which Mr. Gbow described as central to the day’s theme and discussions.

Acknowledging the limited funding for this year’s event, Mr Gbow emphasised that activities will primarily be based in Freetown. However, he underscored the Ministry’s commitment to inclusivity, stressing that children from provincial areas will also be invited to participate. This year’s budget includes resources for dignity kits, school supplies, and transportation assistance for young participants from rural areas to ensure widespread involvement.

Development partners were urged to contribute financially to help meet the remaining needs for the event. YAKAN announced during the meeting that UNICEF will support the participation of 500 students from local schools with additional funding for event costs.

Philipa Cride-Cole, President of the Children’s Forum Network (CFN), suggested that rural children be given the opportunity to observe the parliamentary committee hearing on the CRA bill, which would give them firsthand experience with the legislative process affecting their rights.

The meeting concluded with contributions from CFN representatives, who shared updates on their involvement in preparations. Assistant Director Gbow expressed appreciation for the dedication of all stakeholders and affirmed the Ministry’s commitment to a successful and impactful World Children’s Day celebration.
