Promoting Eco-consciousness: MTCA Leads Beach Cleaning Exercise Lumley-Aberdeen Beach.

In a continued effort to promote eco-consciousness and preserve Sierra Leone’s natural beauty, the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs (MTCA), alongside the National Tourist Board and the Monuments and Relics Commission, spearheaded a massive beach cleaning exercise at Lumley-Aberdeen Beach. Minister Nabeela Tunis led the initiative, which saw active participation from partners, volunteers, and community members.

As a key pillar of the Ministry’s 2025 Year of Eco-Tourism campaign, this regular cleaning exercise underscores the sector’s commitment to restoring orderliness and maintaining the pristine beauty of prime tourist attractions.

Minister’s Call for Eco-Responsibility

During the exercise, Minister Tunis emphasised the importance of building on the successes of the 2024 Tourism for All Campaign by ensuring consistent beach clean-ups. She expressed concern over irresponsible waste disposal by some beach bar owners and warned that punitive measures would be enforced against those who litter the beach.

"To sustain the influx of locals and tourists, we must maintain a clean and safe environment. I urge everyone to be eco-conscious and responsible for preserving our attractions," Minister Tunis stated.

A Collective Effort for a Sustainable Future

The beach cleaning exercise was collaborative, bringing together private sector stakeholders, civil society organisations, community members, partners, and volunteers. Their participation reflects the inclusive nature of the 2025 Year of Eco-Tourism, reinforcing the shared responsibility of protecting Sierra Leone’s natural heritage.
