Sierra Leone’s Mines Minister attends Kimberley Plenary Meeting in Dubai.

Sierra Leone’s Minister of Mines and Mineral Resources and Chairman of the African Diamond Producing Association (ADPA), Julius Daniel Mattai has attended the opening session of the Kimberley Process Plenary Meeting in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

In his opening address to delegates, Chairman of the Kimberley Process, Ahmed Bin Sulayem called for unanimity in the face of a challenging diamond mining and trading cycle. He said that the Kimberley Process must move, as a matter of urgency, with renewed vigor to address and reach consensus on several resolutions and several proposed amendments. He also spoke on the development, integration, and introduction of artificial intelligence in diamond traceability and adoption of Kimberley Process principles for critical minerals.

On the margins of the event, Minister Mattai, accompanied by Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to the UAE, Rashid Sesay also held fruitful bilateral discussions with the Kimberley Process Chairman to identify areas of common endeavor and shared insights into consensus building, address current resolutions and amendments and coordinate future engagements between ADPA and the Kimberley Process.

The Sierra Leone delegation further participated in various working groups and meetings including, The Working Group of Diamond Experts, The Working Group on Alluvial and Artisanal Production, The Working Group on Monitoring, and The Ahoc-Review and Reform.
