Speaker Thomas Engages Opposition Leaders in High-Stakes Governance Talks.

In restoring legislative stability, Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament, Segepoh Solomon Thomas, held a meeting with opposition leadership on Wednesday, March 25, 2026. The engagement sought to chart a clear path toward the opposition’s return to parliamentary sittings, ending a period of prolonged absence.

Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Abdul Kargbo, articulated the core grievance behind their withdrawal from legislative proceedings: the appointment of Mr. Edmond Alpha as Sierra Leone’s new Chief Electoral Commissioner. Kargbo maintained that Alpha’s role must not extend to overseeing or supervising the 2028 elections, framing the issue as fundamental to electoral integrity.

Responding to these concerns, Speaker Thomas appealed to opposition members to set aside partisan differences and resume their legislative duties. He underscored that executive decisions should not serve as grounds for parliamentary boycott, reminding delegates that Parliament operates as an independent branch of government. Their mandate, he stressed, was to serve the people of Sierra Leone, and alternative channels existed for airing dissent without disrupting legislative functions.

The Speaker further drew attention to several pending constitutional amendments requiring urgent parliamentary action. He framed these reforms as historic, urging opposition participation to ensure broad-based input in shaping the nation’s legal framework.

Expressing appreciation for the opposition’s willingness to engage, Thomas committed to relaying the meeting’s outcomes to His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio. He emphasized the need for a holistic resolution to the current governance impasse.

This dialogue marks a significant step toward reinforcing parliamentary democracy and fostering bipartisan cooperation. Speaker Thomas’s proactive outreach reflects a steadfast commitment to effective governance and inclusive representation.

Expectations remain high that the engagement will facilitate the opposition’s swift return to parliamentary proceedings, paving the way for a more collaborative approach to Sierra Leone’s governance challenges.
