In a move to ensure every voice is counted, Statistics Sierra Leone (Stats SL) has mobilized a coalition of the nation's most influential audio influencers. On January 9th, 2026, radio presenters, continuity announcers, and club DJs from across the country gathered at Stats SL’s headquarters for a strategy session, forging a vital partnership for the upcoming Population and Housing Census.
Under the theme “Partnering with presenters and DJs to Promote and Popularize Census 2026,” the engagement recognized the unparalleled reach of these media personalities into every community, from urban centers to remote villages. The dialogue focused on crafting innovative campaigns to drive participation, especially among youth, rural populations, and vulnerable groups. Participants from Freetown, Tonkolili, Port Loko, Pujehun, Kenema, Falaba, and beyond contributed actionable ideas, marking a new chapter of collaborative national planning.
Officials underscored the census as a cornerstone for Sierra Leone’s future. Mr. Abdulai Salia Brima, National Census Coordinator, detailed how the collected data will directly inform improvements in infrastructure, education, and socio-economic development. The critical dates were outlined: Census Night is set for December 1st, 2026, with enumeration running from December 2nd to 14th, 2026.
Speaking for the Statistician General, Dr. Mohamed P. M. Korjie championed the vision of an “Inclusive Census.” He reinforced Stats SL's independence and mandate, stressing that every citizen’s participation is a national duty. “Radio is our most powerful tool,” Dr. Korjie noted, calling for a wave of census-themed songs, slogans, and programming.
The response from the media community was overwhelmingly positive, with many noting this was their first formal invitation into the census planning process. In a decisive move, DJ Jesse (Choice FM), DJ Kallox (Citizen Radio), and Master Jaye (Africa Radio) were selected by their peers to lead a joint proposal for nationwide messaging.
The group pledged to leverage their platforms from prime-time shows to club events and community gatherings to spread the word. To maximize impact, they requested logistical support like megaphones and Bluetooth speakers to penetrate hard-to-reach and slum communities, ensuring no one is left behind.
Mr. Samuel Ansumana, Director of Communication and Public Relations at Stats SL, hailed the participants as essential partners in shaping public opinion. He reiterated the commitment to sustained collaboration, ensuring the 2026 Census truly reflects the strength and diversity of Sierra Leone.
This unprecedented alliance signals a proactive, people-centered approach to national statistics, turning up the volume on a message that counts: everyone matters.
