SIERRA LEONE AND THE GAMBIA FORGE PATH TOWARD BILATERAL COOPERATION ON GENDER AND SOCIAL WELFARE.

The High Commissioner of Sierra Leone to The Gambia, Her Excellency Martha Kanagbo, has held a strategic meeting with the Gambian Minister of Gender, Women, Children, and Social Welfare, in a move aimed at strengthening bilateral ties through cooperation on gender equality and social protection. The High Commissioner was accompanied by the Head of Chancery during the high-level engagement.

At the center of their dialogue was the development of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which is expected to serve as a framework for policy exchange and joint programming between the two countries. The proposed MoU will focus on advancing women’s political participation, sharing best practices in gender-responsive governance, and enhancing mutual learning between Sierra Leone and The Gambia in social welfare reform.

The Gambian Ministry of Gender will take the lead in drafting the agreement, which will then be reviewed by Sierra Leone’s Ministries of Gender and Children’s Affairs and Social Welfare to ensure a collaborative and mutually beneficial arrangement.

Beyond formal cooperation, High Commissioner Kanagbo appealed for greater humanitarian support for Sierra Leonean nationals in The Gambia, particularly widows and girls pursuing education. She also requested the extension of scholarship opportunities to Sierra Leonean students and called for assistance in addressing the plight of nationals detained for minor offenses, such as immigration infractions.

In response, the Gambian Minister of Gender expressed unwavering support for the shared initiatives and pledged to work with relevant agencies to extend social protection services to vulnerable Sierra Leonean nationals, including widows and detained individuals. She affirmed her Ministry’s commitment to facilitating scholarship access and ensuring inclusivity in all bilateral development programs.

This engagement marks a significant milestone in Sierra Leone–Gambia relations, highlighting a spirit of compassion and shared responsibility for citizen welfare and empowerment. It sets the stage for enhanced collaboration that centers people, equity, and mutual advancement.
