At the 55th Session of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council in Abuja, on Tuesday, 9 December, 2025, Sierra Leone’s Foreign Minister and Chair of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers, Alhaji Timothy Musa Kabba, reaffirmed President Julius Maada Bio’s commitment to promoting democracy, peace, and security in West Africa.
Minister Kabba stressed the need for strong collective action as the region faces growing political and security challenges, citing the recent coup in Guinea-Bissau and attempted coup in Benin as signs of democratic fragility.
He highlighted President Bio’s rapid response to the Guinea-Bissau crisis by convening an extraordinary virtual summit and leading a follow-up mission that helped ease tensions.
He reiterated ECOWAS’s zero tolerance stance on unconstitutional changes of government and urged the council to take decisions that restore confidence among West African citizens.
ECOWAS Commission President Dr. Umar Alieu Touray also called for renewed regional commitment, thanking international partners and praising Nigeria’s swift response to the attempted coup in Benin.
Marking ECOWAS’s 50th anniversary, he warned that recurring crises threaten the bloc’s credibility and presented a risk assessment showing widespread political and security vulnerabilities across member states.
President Touray urged bold action on terrorism, coup prevention, electoral integrity, democratic transitions especially in Guinea and organized crime.
He expressed confidence that the council’s deliberations would produce strong recommendations for the next ECOWAS Heads of State Summit.
